The short answer

Are Goodyear tyres any good?

Yes. Goodyear is a premium brand with consistently strong wet performance, and its Vector 4Seasons is one of the few all-season tyres genuinely suited to a British year. Goodyear also owns Dunlop in Europe, so the two share technology while sitting at different prices.

If you would rather buy one set of tyres than two, Goodyear's Vector 4Seasons is the product to ask about. It is one of very few all-season tyres genuinely suited to a British year, and it saves you the changeover, the second set and the storage.

What it no longer owns is Dunlop. The European business went to Sumitomo in a sale completed on 7 May 2025, so the old assumption that buying Dunlop is buying a cheaper Goodyear no longer holds the way it did. The two brands are now genuinely separate businesses in this market.

Goodyear's strongest ground is all-season and van rather than ultra high performance. The Vector 4Seasons is one of very few all-season tyres properly suited to a British year: it carries the three-peak mountain snowflake for winter capability while staying composed in summer heat, which is the compromise this climate actually needs.

For van and light commercial work the Cargo range is a serious option, and the load ratings are where the attention should go rather than the badge. A van tyre that is under-rated for the plated weight is a failed MOT and an insurance problem, not just a wear issue.

Nothing is made here any more. Wolverhampton closed in December 2016 after nearly 90 years of production, so UK stock is imported from the European plants. We fit at your home, your depot or the roadside, 24 hours a day, with no call-out charge.

When the tyre goes

The worst place, the worst time

This is what we get called to, every day and every night.

01A580

The dual carriageway at dusk

A blowout on the East Lancs with the traffic doing seventy. You get the car to the layby and the sealant kit does nothing for a torn sidewall. The tyre and the fitter come to you.

026AM

The early shift you cannot miss

Nurses, warehouse staff and drivers start before any tyre bay opens. A flat at six in the morning is not a reason to lose a day. We are already on shift.

03SPARE

The spare that is not there

Most cars built since 2015 have a can of foam where the spare used to be. It will not fix a sidewall or a big cut. A mobile fitter is the spare wheel now.

The range

The current Goodyear range, and what each one is for

The current UK line-up. Vector is all-season, Eagle F1 is performance, EfficientGrip is touring and cargo, Wrangler is SUV.

01

Vector 4Seasons Gen-3

All-season. The strong suit. Leads ADAC's 17 inch all-season class. Available as SUV and with SealTech self sealing.

02

Vector All Season 4

All-season. The newer addition to the all-season family, alongside Eagle Sport All Season for quicker cars.

03

EfficientGrip Performance 2

Touring summer. The everyday tyre for saloons and hatchbacks, built around low rolling resistance.

04

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 and SuperSport

Performance. The performance range. Competent rather than class-leading. See the honest verdict below.

05

UltraGrip Performance 3

Winter. The current dedicated winter tyre.

06

Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure and DuraTrac

SUV and 4x4. Genuine all-terrain fitments, plus Wrangler Territory HT for road-biased SUVs. EfficientGrip Cargo 2 and Vector 4Seasons Cargo: Van Commercial fitments including a well-regarded all-season for vans..

Goodyear marks its EV-suitable tyres with an EV-Ready logo, using Electric Drive Technology and Electric Drive Ready labels. Worth asking about if you run an electric car.

Since 1898

Named after a man who never worked there

Goodyear was founded on 29 August 1898 at Akron, Ohio, by Frank Seiberling, and named after Charles Goodyear, who invented vulcanised rubber, had been dead for 38 years and had no connection whatsoever to the company. It is still headquartered at Akron and it is still independent.

It bought Cooper Tire in 2021 for 2.5 billion dollars, and it also owns Fulda, Dębica and Sava. What it no longer owns is Dunlop, which went to Sumitomo Rubber Industries in a deal completed on 7 May 2025. That is the single most out-of-date fact on competitor pages across the whole UK tyre trade.

Why this brand

Why drivers pick Goodyear

Six reasons Goodyear goes on the van, and one category where we would point elsewhere.

014SEASONS

The best answer to a British year

The Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 leads ADAC's 17 inch all-season class. If you want one set of tyres all year, this is a genuine front runner.

02VAN

Very strong on commercial

EfficientGrip Cargo and Vector 4Seasons Cargo. Van work is one of the two things Goodyear is currently best at.

03EV

A proper EV programme

Electric Drive Technology and Electric Drive Ready under an EV-Ready logo. Original equipment on the VW ID. Buzz and the Audi Q6 e-tron.

04SEAL

SealTech and SoundComfort

Self sealing and noise-absorbing foam versions, the same ideas as ContiSeal and Acoustic under Goodyear names.

05ROF

RunOnFlat construction

Goodyear's run-flat marking. Worth identifying before you discover there is no spare in the boot.

06OE

Co-developed fitments

The Audi Q6 e-tron tyre was developed with Audi using virtual assessment. Goodyear is original equipment across Audi, BMW, Ford and VW.

The honest verdict

What we would tell you about Goodyear on the phone

One genuine weakness, one big fact everyone else has wrong, and where it is the right buy.

01

The performance flagship is mid-pack

In the 2025 Auto Express summer tyre test the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 finished sixth of nine. It was within two per cent of the lead, so it is not a bad tyre, but testers described it as middling with wheelspin flares in tight turns. If you are buying for a hot hatch or a fast estate and you want the sharpest option, we would point you at the Pirelli or the Bridgestone in that size. Where Goodyear genuinely leads is all-season and van, and that is where we recommend it without hesitation.

02

Goodyear does not own Dunlop any more, whatever the other pages say

Sumitomo Rubber Industries completed its purchase of the Dunlop consumer tyre brand for Europe, North America and Oceania on 7 May 2025, for 526 million dollars plus transition fees and inventory. Goodyear held a licence to keep making and selling Dunlop consumer tyres in Europe only until 31 December 2025. Almost every UK retailer page still describes them as one company. If you have been buying Dunlop because you liked what Goodyear did with it, that is a genuine reason to check what you are buying now. See Dunlop tyres.

03

The European factory base is shrinking

Wolverhampton, Goodyear's first factory outside the United States, closed in December 2016 after around ninety years. Philippsburg closed in 2017, the Fulda plant closed in 2025 though the brand continues, and Fürstenwalde is phasing out tyre manufacturing by the end of 2027. Active European car tyre plants include Hanau and Riesa in Germany, Dębica in Poland and Kranj in Slovenia. None of that makes the tyres worse, but it does affect which sizes are easy to get.

04

Where it is the obvious choice

A family car that has to cope with January, or a van that cannot pick its days. The Vector 4Seasons family is one of the strongest all-season answers on the market and the Cargo version is genuinely good. If that is your situation, Goodyear is near the top of our list.

Goodyear, explained

Goodyear tyres fitted at your door across the North West and North Wales

Goodyear is an independent American tyre manufacturer founded on 29 August 1898 at Akron, Ohio, and still headquartered there. It owns Cooper Tire, Fulda, Dębica and Sava. It no longer owns Dunlop: Sumitomo Rubber Industries completed that purchase on 7 May 2025 and Goodyear's European transition licence expired on 31 December 2025. No Goodyear car tyres are made in Britain since Wolverhampton closed in December 2016. Goodyear's strongest categories are all-season and van. We supply and fit the full range at your home, work or the roadside across the North West and North Wales, 24 hours a day, with no call-out charge. Call 0300 124 6981 or send your size on WhatsApp.

The Dunlop split is the fact everybody else has wrong

If you take one piece of information away, make it this one. On 7 May 2025 Sumitomo Rubber Industries completed its purchase of the rights to the Dunlop brand for consumer, commercial and specialty tyres across Europe, North America and Oceania. Goodyear kept a transition licence to carry on making and selling Dunlop consumer tyres in Europe, and that licence expired on 31 December 2025. Two entirely separate companies now, where for decades there was effectively one. Search for Dunlop tyres today and you will find page after page from major UK retailers still describing them as part of Goodyear. That matters if you buy Dunlop out of habit, because the tyre coming out of the box in 2026 may not be from the same factory or use the same compound as the one you bought in 2023.

Goodyear and Dunlop tyre sidewalls side by side

Where Goodyear is genuinely at the front

All-season and van, and both of those matter a great deal in this part of the country. The Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 leads ADAC's 17 inch all-season class, which puts it right at the top of the category most British drivers should actually be shopping in: one set of tyres, works in January, no changeover, carries the three peak mountain snowflake. The Cargo version does the same job for a van, and a van is precisely the vehicle that cannot wait for better weather. If you have a family car that has to start on a frosty morning and get up a wet hill in February, or a van that works whatever the forecast says, Goodyear belongs at the top of your shortlist. See all-season tyres and van tyres.

Goodyear van tyres being fitted at a depot

Fitted where the vehicle is, at any hour

Every Goodyear we sell is fitted at your home, your workplace, your yard or the roadside. There is no call-out charge, because fitting, balancing, a new valve and taking the old tyre away are priced into the tyre. Common sizes are carried on the vans, we average around 32 minutes to reach you in our core area, and we work every hour of every day, which for a working van is usually the difference between losing an hour and losing a day. If the damage turns out to be repairable to the British Standard we will do a puncture repair and charge you for that instead of selling you a tyre.

FAQs

Goodyear tyre FAQs

What drivers ask us about Goodyear, starting with the one everybody gets wrong.

Not any more. Sumitomo Rubber Industries completed its purchase of the Dunlop consumer tyre brand for Europe, North America and Oceania on 7 May 2025.

Goodyear held a transition licence to keep making and selling Dunlop consumer tyres in Europe only until 31 December 2025. After that they are entirely separate businesses.

Almost every UK retailer page still describes them as one company, which is why this is worth checking if you buy Dunlop out of loyalty. See Dunlop tyres.

Goodyear is independent. It is a publicly listed American company headquartered at Akron, Ohio, and traded on Nasdaq.

It owns Cooper Tire, bought in 2021 for 2.5 billion dollars, along with Kelly Springfield, Douglas, Fulda, Dębica and Sava.

It was named after Charles Goodyear, who invented vulcanised rubber and had been dead for 38 years when the company was founded. He had no connection to it.

No. Goodyear's Wolverhampton factory, its first outside the United States, closed in December 2016 after nearly ninety years.

Around 330 jobs went with it, and tyre production there had already ceased before the end, with the site latterly doing compound mixing and retreading.

Active European plants include Hanau and Riesa in Germany, Dębica in Poland and Kranj in Slovenia. Pirelli is the only one of the six premium brands still making car tyres in Britain.

Yes, genuinely. The Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 leads ADAC's 17 inch all-season class, which makes it one of the strongest answers available for a driver who wants one set of tyres all year.

It carries the three peak mountain snowflake, which is a tested certification under UNECE Regulation 117 rather than a marketing symbol, and there is a Cargo version for vans and an SUV version.

If you are weighing up whether to stop running summer tyres, this is one of the two or three patterns worth shortlisting. Read all-season tyres.

Competent rather than class-leading. In the 2025 Auto Express summer test it finished sixth of nine, within two per cent of the lead but described by testers as middling, with wheelspin flares in tight turns.

That is not a bad tyre. It is simply not the one we would pick if the sharpest possible performance in your size is the priority, and we would say so rather than take the order.

For a quick car, ask us about the Pirelli and the Bridgestone in your size. See performance tyres.

An EfficientGrip touring tyre will commonly pass 30,000 miles, and a Vector all-season is in a similar range. An Eagle F1 performance tyre will do considerably less.

Alignment and pressures move that further than the brand does. Shoulders wearing before the centre is a tracking problem, not a tyre problem.

See how long tyres last and wheel alignment.

ROF, or RunOnFlat, is Goodyear's run-flat construction: a reinforced sidewall that supports the car for a limited distance at reduced speed after the tyre deflates.

Once one has actually been run flat it should normally be replaced rather than repaired, because the sidewall may be damaged with nothing visible from outside.

SealTech is a different thing, a self sealing layer that closes small punctures as they happen. We will tell you which yours is. Read run-flat tyres explained.

Goodyear is original equipment across Audi, BMW, Ford and Volkswagen, including the VW ID. Buzz, the VW Passat Variant and the Audi Q6 e-tron.

The Q6 e-tron fitment was co-developed with Audi using virtual assessment, which is the kind of thing that only happens when a car maker is serious about the tyre.

If your car came on Goodyears, check the sidewall for a car maker marking as well as the pattern name before replacing.

Yes. Goodyear runs an EV programme with Electric Drive Technology and Electric Drive Ready labels under an EV-Ready logo, and it is original equipment on the VW ID. Buzz and the Audi Q6 e-tron.

An electric car needs a higher load index for the battery weight, low rolling resistance so range does not suffer, and quietness because there is no engine noise to mask the tyre.

Read do electric cars need special tyres. We check the load index against your car before ordering.

No more than comparable premium tyres, and several ranges offer SoundComfort, a foam layer bonded inside the tyre to absorb cabin noise.

The EU label gives an external noise figure in decibels with an A to C class for every tyre sold, so you can compare rather than assume.

Tyres that have become louder rather than always being loud are telling you about a wear pattern. See why tyres get noisy.

Yes. Goodyear is one of the six brands universally classed as premium in the UK, alongside Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Pirelli and Michelin, though it usually sits a little below Michelin and Continental on price.

Being in the premium tier does not mean leading every category. Goodyear currently leads all-season and van and sits mid-pack in ultra high performance.

Read premium tyres for how the tier works and tyre brands explained for the full map.

SealTech is Goodyear's self sealing technology: a layer inside the tyre that closes around a puncturing object so the tyre keeps its pressure.

It is available on several ranges including the Vector 4Seasons and EfficientGrip Performance C+. It is not a run-flat and the two work in completely different ways.

Whether a sealed tyre can also be conventionally repaired depends on where the damage is. We will inspect it rather than guess.

Yes. Everything we fit is fitted at your home, work, yard or the roadside across the North West and North Wales, 24 hours a day, and there is no call-out charge.

Common Goodyear sizes are on the vans, so a same day fit is usually possible and we average around 32 minutes to reach you in our core area.

Send your size and postcode on WhatsApp or call 0300 124 6981.

It depends on the size, and tyre prices move too often for a figure here to stay accurate. One price covers the tyre, fitting, a new valve, balancing and disposal.

There is no separate call-out fee. Send your size and we will quote the Goodyear next to a mid-range alternative so the gap is a real number rather than a guess.

Pay monthly is available on two tyres or more at 0% interest subject to status.
