The short answer

What tyres does a Jaguar need?

A Jaguar needs the size, load index and speed rating on the plate in the driver door shut, and on the bigger wheels the front and rear sizes differ. An XE runs 205/55 R17, 225/45 R18 or a staggered 225/40 R19 front and 255/35 R19 rear. Some Jaguar original equipment tyres carry a J marking, which is worth matching on a car still on its first set.

Jaguar is one of the few makes where a sidewall letter genuinely means something. A number of the tyres Jaguar fits at the factory carry a J marking, mostly from Pirelli, Continental and Dunlop, showing the tyre was built to Jaguar's own specification for that car. It is not universal across the range, it is not a legal requirement, and a tyre in the correct size, load index and speed rating without it is still a correct replacement. What we do is look at what is on the car and tell you honestly whether matching it is worth the extra.

The other thing that decides the job is the axle. An XE, an XF and an F-Type on 19 or 20 inch wheels run a wider tyre on the back than the front, so the model name and one size is not enough. We need to know which corner is flat before the van is loaded.

TPMS is direct across the whole range, with a battery sensor in every wheel. The battery is sealed and lasts roughly five to ten years, so an older XF or F-Pace often has one dead already, and we tell you before we fit.

F-Pace, E-Pace and I-Pace tyres are big and heavy, and pothole damage on them shows as a sidewall bulge that cannot be repaired. Fitted at home, work or the roadside, 24 hours a day, with no call out charge.

The Jaguar sizes we fit most

Jaguar wheel sizes run from 17 to 22 inches, and on the saloons and the sports car the rear tyre is wider than the front from 19 inch upward. These are the factory fitments.

Markings and sensors

The J marking, staggered sizes, and a sensor in every wheel

Jaguar is one of the makes where the sidewall letter is real. Here is what it means and what it does not.

01

The J marking is genuine, and it is not universal

A number of the tyres fitted at the Jaguar factory carry a J on the sidewall, mostly from Pirelli, Continental and Dunlop, meaning the tyre was tuned to Jaguar's own brief for that model. It is not on every original tyre across the range, it is not a legal requirement, and any tyre in the correct size, load index and speed rating without it is a correct replacement. Where it earns its keep is on a car still wearing its first set, where matching the J tyre keeps the balance of grip and noise the car was signed off with. On a car that has already moved to a non marked tyre on the other axle, chasing the letter buys little.

02

Front and rear are different sizes on the bigger wheels

From 19 inch upward the XE, the XF and the F-Type carry a wider tyre on the rear axle. An XE on 19s is 225/40 R19 at the front and 255/35 R19 at the back, an XF 245/40 R19 and 275/35 R19, and an F-Type on 20s 255/35 R20 and 295/30 R20. Two boxes of the same size will not fit a staggered car, so we need the corner as well as the model before we load the van. The staggered cars also cannot rotate tyres front to rear, so the rears on a rear wheel drive Jaguar go first.

03

Direct TPMS on every model

Every Jaguar in the current parc carries a battery sensor behind each valve that sends a live pressure reading to the dashboard. The battery is sealed and lasts roughly five to ten years, so an XF or F-Pace over about seven years old will often have one sensor already dead, and a warning that stays on with the pressures correct is nearly always that rather than a tyre. We test the sensors before we start and say which are working. A valve service kit at each change is cheap insurance against a seized sensor nut.

04

Big, heavy tyres that do not like potholes

An F-Pace on 255/50 R20, an I-Pace on 245/50 R20 and an F-Type on 20 inch rears are all wide, low and carrying a heavy car. A hard pothole strike on the surfaces round here tends to show as a bulge in the sidewall, which means the carcass has failed and the tyre cannot be repaired whatever the tread looks like. We check the rim while the tyre is off, because the alloy usually takes the hit as well.

Jaguar tyres, explained

Jaguar tyres fitted at your door across the North West and North Wales

Jaguar tyres fitted at your door, with the J marking explained honestly and the rear size checked before we set off. Some of the tyres Jaguar fits at the factory carry a J on the sidewall, mostly from Pirelli, Continental and Dunlop, and it is worth matching on a car still on its first set and optional once the car has moved away from it. An XE, XF or F-Type on 19 or 20 inch wheels carries a wider tyre on the rear than the front, so we need the corner as well as the model, and a Jaguar carries a sensor behind every valve whose battery runs out in time. What the J on a Jaguar tyre actually means

Jaguar is one of a handful of makes where a letter on the sidewall is real rather than a sales line. Some of the tyres fitted on the production line carry a J, mostly on Pirelli, Continental and Dunlop, and it means the tyre was developed or tuned to Jaguar's own brief for that model, usually around steering feel, noise and the balance between the front and rear axles. Two things follow from that. First, it is not everywhere. Plenty of Jaguars left the factory on tyres with no marking at all, and the J is more common on the higher trims and the sports car than on an entry XE or E-Pace. Second, it is not a rule. A tyre in the correct size, load index and speed rating without a J is a legal, safe and correct replacement, and the law and the MOT do not care about the letter. Where it earns its money is on a car still on its original set, where replacing one worn J tyre with the same tyre keeps the car feeling the way it was signed off. On a car that has already had a mixed set fitted by a previous owner, chasing the marking on one corner changes very little, and we will say so rather than sell you the dearer tyre by default.

Jaguar tyre sidewall showing the size and markings

Why we ask which corner is flat before we ask the model

From 19 inch upward the XE, the XF and the F-Type carry a different tyre on each axle, and the difference is not small. An XE on 19s runs 225/40 R19 at the front and 255/35 R19 at the back, an XF 245/40 R19 and 275/35 R19, and an F-Type on 20s 255/35 R20 and 295/30 R20, with the rear a full 40mm wider. A staggered setup is there to put more rubber under the driven rear axle of a rear wheel drive car, and it has three consequences for the owner. The rears wear first and often noticeably faster than the fronts, because they carry the power and the weight transfer. You cannot rotate the tyres front to rear to even that out, so the rear pair comes up for replacement on its own. And a fitter sent the model name and a single size can arrive with the wrong tyre, which is why we ask which corner is down before anything is loaded. The F-Pace, E-Pace and I-Pace are the same size all round, and on those it is the load index that wants checking, because the I-Pace in particular is a very heavy car.

Fitted where the car is, whatever the hour

Every Jaguar is fitted where you are rather than where we are, and the price we give you is the price you pay. Tyre, labour, valve, balancing and disposal are all inside it, with nothing added for the journey. XE and XF 18 inch sizes are ones we hold, and the F-Pace, E-Pace and F-Type sizes are with us within a day, J marked where it makes sense and you want it. Because there is a sensor behind every valve on a Jaguar, we test them first, keep the machine head clear of them, and say straight away if one has stopped responding. The wheels go back on with a torque wrench, which matters on a coded locking nut that has been chewed by a previous impact gun. Plenty of punctures are repairable, and when yours is we say so and do a repair instead.

FAQs

Jaguar tyre FAQs

What Jaguar owners ask us, starting with the J.

No. The J is a genuine Jaguar original equipment marking carried by some Pirelli, Continental and Dunlop tyres, but it is not a legal requirement and it is not on every tyre the factory fits. A tyre in the correct size, load index and speed rating without it is a correct replacement.

It is worth matching on a car still on its first set, because the J tyre was tuned to that model and replacing one worn tyre like for like keeps the car feeling as it did.

On a car that has already had a mixed set fitted, one J tyre on one corner changes little, and we will say so rather than quote the dearer tyre by default.

205/55 R17 on the entry car, 225/45 R18 on the middle of the range, and 225/40 R19 on the front with 255/35 R19 on the rear of the sportier trims. The 19 inch car has different sizes front and back.

The plate in the driver door shut lists the size and pressure for the wheel the car left the factory on. That is the figure we work from, because a second owner may have changed the wheels.

Send the registration and tell us which corner is flat. See tyre sizes.

Because the XE, XF and F-Type are rear wheel drive and Jaguar fits a staggered setup from 19 inch upward to put more rubber under the driven axle. The rears carry the power and the weight transfer under acceleration.

It means the rears wear faster than the fronts and cannot be swapped front to rear to even that out, so the rear pair comes up for replacement on its own.

If one rear is going much faster than the other, or wearing on the inner edge, the alignment wants checking. See uneven tyre wear.

Most do. The F-Pace was generally supplied with a space saver under the boot floor, though some trims and years came with a sealant kit instead, and a previous owner may have removed it. Lift the floor and look before you need it.

The I-Pace has no spare at all, because the battery takes the space, and the XE and XF usually have a space saver. A space saver is limited to 50 mph and to getting you home.

A 24 hour mobile fitter makes the question academic. See no spare wheel, what to do.

235/65 R18, 245/50 R20 or 255/40 R22 by wheel, and always in the load index on the plate. The I-Pace weighs well over two tonnes and puts electric torque through all four wheels, so a tyre with a lower load index than specified is not an option.

EV specific tyres with a stiffer construction and lower rolling resistance are what the car was developed on, and they hold the range better than a conventional tyre in the same size.

See EV tyres explained for what the difference is.

Almost always a dead sensor. Every Jaguar has a battery powered sensor in each wheel, the battery is sealed and lasts roughly five to ten years, and on a car over about seven years old they start failing one at a time.

The dashboard will usually show a pressure for three wheels and a blank or a fault for the fourth, which tells you which sensor has gone.

A replacement sensor is a part cost rather than labour. See TPMS sensor replacement for what the job involves.

Jaguar did not fit run flats as standard, and the suspension was not set up for them, so we would not recommend adding them. The car was tuned around a conventional tyre and a run flat makes it ride noticeably harder.

If the concern is being stranded without a spare, a 24 hour mobile fitter solves that without changing how the car drives.

If you do have run flats on a used car, check the plate, because the size and load index still need to match. See tyre sizes.

In the tool tray under the boot floor on most XE, XF and F-Pace, sometimes in the glovebox, and it is a coded key with a number on it. Find it before you book, because a missing key is what stops a mobile job.

Jaguar keys round off when a previous fitter has used an impact gun on them. If yours looks chewed, tell us when you book so we arrive prepared.

If the key is lost, the code lets a dealer supply a new one. See locking wheel nut removal for what we can do in the meantime.

It should not, and it can if the job is rushed. Jaguar has a sensor inside every wheel, and a sensor sits exactly where a tyre machine works. That is true of every Jaguar in the current parc, from the XE to the I-Pace, and the dashboard shows a real pressure for each wheel.

The sensors also have a non-replaceable battery that typically lasts five to ten years, so on an older car one may already be dead before we touch it. We check and tell you first.

A valve service kit at each tyre change is cheap insurance. See TPMS sensor replacement.

Yes. The plate in the driver's door shut gives two sets of figures, one for normal use and a higher one for a fully laden car, and the gap between them is not trivial.

On a Jaguar carrying weight, running the unladen figure builds heat in the tyre, and heat is what destroys tyres rather than mileage.

If you load and unload regularly, it is usually easier to set to the laden figure and accept a slightly firmer ride. See tyre pressures explained.

Usually the glovebox, the boot well alongside the jack, or under the parcel shelf. Have a look before you book rather than when we arrive.

This is genuinely the commonest reason a mobile job stops halfway. The key is made softer than the nut on purpose, so it rounds off if somebody has previously tightened the nuts with an impact gun.

Tell us if yours looks chewed and we will come prepared. See seized and locking wheel nuts.

In our core area we average around 32 minutes. Outside it, or on an unusual size that has to be ordered, we will give you an honest time rather than an optimistic one.

We work every hour of every day, including Sundays and the middle of the night, which is when a flat tyre is least convenient and most garages are shut.

Send your postcode with the size on WhatsApp and we will tell you realistically when we can be there.

Because it would be wrong within a month. Tyre prices move with the market and with the size, and a figure printed here would end up misleading somebody.

What we will commit to is what the figure includes: the tyre, the fitting, a new valve, balancing, setting the pressures and disposal, with no call-out fee.

Send the size and you get a real number for your actual car in a few minutes rather than a range.

The rears on a rear wheel drive XE, XF or F-Type often go in 12,000 to 18,000 miles, with the fronts lasting roughly twice that. On an F-Pace or I-Pace the weight and the wide 20 inch tyre bring the whole set down together.

Because the staggered cars cannot rotate front to rear, expect to buy rear pairs more often than full sets. Alignment and pressure decide more of it than the brand.

See how long tyres last and wheel balancing for the vibration that appears on a big wheel.
