The short answer

Are part worn tyres legal in the UK?

Yes, part worn tyres are legal to buy and sell in the UK, but only if they meet strict rules. Each needs at least 2mm of tread across the full width and all the way round, no bulges, deep cuts or exposed cord, proper repairs only, and PART WORN marked on the sidewall in 4mm capitals.

A part worn tyre can only be sold legally if:

  1. It has at least 2mm of tread across the full width and the whole way round.
  2. It is marked PART WORN on the sidewall in capitals at least 4mm high.
  3. It has no lump, bulge or tear, inside or out, and no ply or cord showing.
  4. It has no cut longer than 25mm or 10% of the tyre's width.
  5. Any repairs were done properly, with no plug stuck in from outside.
  6. It still shows its original size, load and speed markings.

Miss any one and the seller is breaking the law. Trading Standards can prosecute. When to replace tyres covers the limits once a tyre is on your car.

Legal is not the same as good. The law checks a tyre on the day of sale. It says nothing about its age, how it was stored, whether it was driven flat or how long it will last you. UK tyre law covers the rules for the tyres on your car.

The detail

Are Part Worn Tyres Legal and Safe in the UK: the full picture

Covered here: are part worn tyres legal in the uk; are part worn tyres safe; are part worn tyres good value; will a part worn tyre pass the mot; what should you check before buying a part worn tyre; what are the cheaper alternatives to part worn tyres.

Are part worn tyres legal in the UK?

Yes. Selling and fitting part worn tyres is legal in the UK. Buying one is legal too. But the seller must meet a set of rules for each tyre, and many do not.

The tyre needs at least 2mm of tread across its full width and all the way round. That is more than the 1.6mm needed on your car, and it covers the whole width, not just the middle. It must be marked PART WORN in capitals at least 4mm high. It must have no lumps, bulges or tears, no ply or cord showing, and no cut longer than 25mm or 10% of its width. Any repair must be to the proper standard, and the original markings must still be readable.

If a seller breaks those rules, it is the seller who is in trouble, not you. But you are still the one driving on the tyre, and once it is on your car, keeping it legal is your job. UK tyre law covers the penalties for tyres on the road.

The markings on a tyre sidewall

Are part worn tyres safe?

Some are fine. The problem is you cannot tell which, and neither can most sellers.

A used tyre has a history you do not know. It may have been driven flat for a mile, which crushes the sidewall inside. It may have hit a kerb or pothole hard enough to break cords, without leaving a bulge yet. It may have been repaired badly, with a plug from outside. It may have sat in a hot yard for years. None of that is easy to see on a tyre on a rack.

Then there is age. A part worn tyre can be six, eight or ten years old. Rubber hardens with age and grips less in the wet. So a tyre that looks deep can still be poor on a rainy road. Always read the DOT date code before buying. Cracked or perished tyres shows what old rubber looks like.

Damage near the shoulder of a used tyre

Are part worn tyres good value?

Usually not, once you count the rubber you are actually buying.

A new car tyre starts at about 8mm. The legal limit is 1.6mm. So a new tyre gives you about 6.4mm of usable tread. A part worn tyre sold at 4mm gives you 2.4mm, well under half. At 3mm, you get 1.4mm, less than a quarter. Even at a low price, you are paying more per millimetre, and per mile, than for a new budget tyre.

And the last few millimetres are the worst ones. Wet grip fades below about 3mm. So much of the life you buy in a part worn tyre is the part where it grips least. You will also be back buying tyres sooner. Best budget tyre brands shows the new value tyres worth a look instead.

A worn tyre with the tread worn down to the wear bars

Will a part worn tyre pass the MOT?

Yes, if it meets the same rules as any tyre on the day of the test. The MOT does not check whether a tyre is new or used.

The tester looks for at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters, all the way round. No cuts deep enough to reach the cords, no bulges, no cord showing. The right size and type for the car, matching across each axle. A tyre that is legal to sell at 2mm will pass. The same tyre a few thousand miles later may not.

That is the catch with part worns before a test. A tyre bought at 2.5mm can be at the limit by the next MOT. If your test is due and your tyres are close, new ones are the safer bet. Failed MOT on tyres lists everything the tester looks at.

A tyre on the machine for inspection

What should you check before buying a part worn tyre?

If you do buy one, check it yourself at the counter. Ask to see it off the rack and in good light.

Look for the PART WORN marking. No marking means the sale is not legal. Measure the tread with a gauge or a 20p in several places, across the full width. Read the DOT code and do the maths on its age. Run your hand around the inside of the tyre if you can, feeling for lumps, patches and plugs. Look at the bead, the edge that seals on the rim, for damage. And check the size, load index and speed rating match your car.

If any of that fails, or the seller will not let you look, walk away. Then have it fitted and balanced properly, with a new valve. How to read tyre size helps you check the codes.

A tyre levered off the rim for inspection

What are the cheaper alternatives to part worn tyres?

Most people buy part worns because they need a tyre today and money is tight. There are better ways to solve both.

A new budget tyre from a known maker comes with full tread, a fresh date code and a clean history. The upfront price is often closer to a good part worn than people expect. If the tyre has a puncture in the repairable area, a repair to BS AU 159 for £39.95 may save it altogether.

If it is two or four tyres at once, you can pay monthly at 0%, subject to status, so you are not choosing between rent and grip. NHS staff and key workers can ask about up to 30% off. Pay monthly tyres explains how it works, and the NHS and key worker discount covers who qualifies.

What you cannot see

Three things a part worn tyre will not tell you

The reasons a cheap used tyre can cost more than it saves.

01PAST

Its history

Driven flat, hit a kerb, run soft for months? A used tyre can hide damage inside that no one can see on the rack.

02DEPTH

Its real life

At 3mm a part worn has less than a quarter of a new tyre's usable tread left, and that is the part with the least wet grip.

03AGE

Its age

Many part worns are years old. Old rubber is harder and grips less in the rain, however deep the tread looks.

FAQs

Part worn tyre questions

The rules, the risks and the real cost.

Yes, part worn tyres are legal to sell and buy in the UK if they meet strict rules. Each needs at least 2mm of tread across its full width and all the way round, no lumps, bulges, tears or exposed cord, no cut over 25mm, proper repairs only, and PART WORN marked in 4mm capitals.

Those rules sit on the seller. If they sell a tyre that breaks them, they can be prosecuted by Trading Standards. But once the tyre is on your car, keeping it legal is your job. That means at least 1.6mm across the central three quarters, no damage and the right size. Break those and it can mean up to £2,500 and 3 points per tyre. UK tyre law covers the rules for the road.

Many part worn tyres on sale fall short of at least one rule, often the marking or hidden damage. If you want to avoid the gamble, a new budget tyre costs less than many people think. Send the size or call 0300 124 6981. Budget tyres shows what we fit, and every price we send is fitted, with no call out charge.

Some part worn tyres are safe, but you cannot easily tell which. A used tyre can hide internal damage from being driven flat, a hard kerb strike or a poor repair. It may also be several years old. New tyres remove that doubt, which is why we recommend new budget tyres over part worns.

The damage that matters most is inside. A tyre driven flat for even a short way can have a crushed sidewall that looks fine outside. A plug stuck in from outside, rather than a proper patch from inside, can leak or fail. Neither shows on a tyre sitting on a rack. Can a punctured tyre be repaired explains what a proper repair involves.

Age is the other hidden risk. Check the four digit DOT code. A tyre that is six or more years old has harder rubber and less wet grip, whatever its depth. Cracked or perished tyres shows the signs. If in doubt, call 0300 124 6981 and ask what a new tyre in your size costs, fitted. The answer is often closer to the part worn price than you would guess.

A part worn tyre must have at least 2mm of tread across its full width and all the way round to be sold legally. That is stricter than the 1.6mm needed on a car, which only covers the central three quarters. A part worn sold at exactly 2mm has almost no legal life left.

Many are sold at 3mm to 5mm. That sounds like a lot, but a new tyre starts at about 8mm, so even 5mm is well over a third worn. Measure several points yourself, including the edges, because wear is rarely even and the seller's figure may be the deepest spot. Tyre wear indicators shows the bars that mark 1.6mm, which is where the tyre ends its legal life on your car.

The useful sum is the tread above 1.6mm. At 3mm you get 1.4mm of life. At 4mm you get 2.4mm. Compare that with about 6.4mm on a new tyre. When to replace tyres explains why the last few millimetres also grip least. Call 0300 124 6981 to compare with a new tyre, fitted at your door with no call out charge.

Yes, a part worn tyre will pass the MOT if it meets the same standard as any tyre on the day: at least 1.6mm across the central three quarters, no cuts to the cords, no bulges, and the right size and type, matched across the axle. The MOT does not ask whether a tyre is new or used.

The risk is timing. A part worn bought at 2.5mm can be at the limit within a few thousand miles, well before your next test. Then you are buying tyres again, sooner than you planned, and possibly after a fail. Mixed sizes or types on one axle also fail, which can happen when part worns are bought one at a time. Failed MOT on tyres lists what the tester checks.

If your MOT is due and the tyres are close, fit new ones before the test. We can come to your home or work, or to the test centre car park. Call 0300 124 6981. Mixing tyres covers matching across an axle. A new pair on the same axle is the simplest way to be sure the car passes and stays legal until the next test.

Usually not. A part worn tyre often costs a good share of a new budget tyre's price but gives a small share of the usable tread. Per millimetre, and per mile, it tends to cost more. It also comes without a known history, a label or a fresh date code.

Here is the simple sum. A new tyre has about 6.4mm of legal tread to use. A part worn at 3mm has 1.4mm. Divide each price by those numbers and the new tyre usually wins, often by a wide margin. And the new tyre grips better the whole way down. Best budget tyre brands shows the value tyres we would look at.

If the problem is cash today, there are other ways. A repair to BS AU 159 for £39.95 if the damage is repairable. Pay monthly at 0% on two or more new tyres, subject to status. NHS and key workers can ask about up to 30% off. Pay monthly tyres explains it. Or call 0300 124 6981 and we will find the lowest sensible option for your car.

Part worn tyres come from used cars being scrapped, from drivers who swap tyres early, and in large numbers from imports of used tyres from other countries. Some are good tyres taken off early. Others were removed for a reason. The seller may not know which.

That is the core problem. A tyre taken off a scrapped car could have been in the crash that scrapped it. A tyre sold on because a driver upgraded may be fine. They sit on the same rack at the same price. Without the history, you are guessing, and the tyre is the only thing between the car and the road. Pothole damage shows the kind of hidden hit a used tyre may have taken.

When you buy new, you know the tyre's whole life, because it starts with you. We only fit new tyres, from budget to premium, with a recent date code. Call 0300 124 6981 or see mid range tyres for the step up from budget. Every tyre we quote is checked against your car's size, load index and speed rating before the price goes out, so what arrives on the van is right first time.

It depends on how much tread is left and how you drive, but usually not long. A part worn at 3mm has only 1.4mm of legal tread to wear, which for many drivers is a few thousand miles. At 4mm it lasts longer, but still well short of a new tyre.

Age limits it too. A part worn that is already seven or eight years old will reach the ten year mark soon, whatever the tread. And because wet grip fades below 3mm, much of that life is spent at the tyre's weakest, on the wet roads the North West sees most of the year. How long do tyres last covers what to expect from a new tyre, in miles and years.

If you drive a lot, the maths gets worse. A high mileage driver can wear out a part worn in weeks. A new budget or mid range tyre will go much further. Tell us your mileage and we will suggest the right one. Call 0300 124 6981. Budget tyres is a good place to start, and a fresh tyre means no more worrying about the next MOT.

A part worn tyre can be repaired if the damage meets the same rules as any tyre: in the central three quarters of the tread, up to 6mm, and the tyre not driven flat. But if it already has a repair, it may not take another close by, and old or thin tyres are poor candidates.

We repair to BS AU 159 for £39.95, with the tyre off the rim and inspected inside. The repair is patched and plugged from within, never pushed in from outside. If a part worn tyre has an old plug or a poor repair, we tell you. We will not repair a tyre that is not safe to repair. Puncture repairs explains the standard.

With a thin part worn, ask whether a repair is worth it. Spending money to save a tyre with 1mm of legal life left is rarely good value. We will say so honestly and give you a fitted price for a new one, so you can choose with the numbers in front of you. Call 0300 124 6981. Can a punctured tyre be repaired covers the rules.

Check for the PART WORN marking in 4mm capitals, at least 2mm of tread across the full width and all the way round, the DOT age code, no lumps, bulges, cuts or cord, no plugs or patches inside, and a size, load index and speed rating that match your car. If any fail, walk away.

Ask to handle the tyre off the rack in good light. Feel around the inside for bumps or patches. Look at the bead, the edge that seals against the wheel, for tears. Use a gauge rather than guessing the depth, and measure at the edges as well as the centre. Check the date code on both sides if you can. How to read tyre size helps you decode the sidewall.

Then work out the price per usable millimetre above 1.6mm and compare it with a new budget tyre. Send us the size and we give you a fitted price for a new one to compare against. Call 0300 124 6981. Best budget tyre brands lists the value names we trust. If the part worn still wins on price, at least you bought it with your eyes open.

No. Every part worn tyre sold in the UK must be marked PART WORN on the sidewall in capitals at least 4mm high, applied so it stays readable. A seller who sells without the marking is breaking the law and can be prosecuted by Trading Standards.

The marking is there so you know what you are buying. It also tells the next fitter the tyre was sold used. If you are offered a used tyre with no marking, that tells you something about how carefully the seller follows the rest of the rules too. Check the tyres already on your car for it as well, if you bought the car used. UK tyre law covers the rules for tyres once they are on the car.

If you think you have been sold an unsafe or illegal part worn, you can report it to your local Trading Standards service. In the meantime, get the tyre checked. Send a photo to 07943 185471 or call 0300 124 6981. When to replace tyres covers the signs that a tyre needs to come off. If it does, we fit a new one at your home or work.

In most cases, yes. A new budget tyre from a known maker gives you full tread, a fresh date code, a clean history and a proper label with its wet grip grade. The upfront price is often closer to a good part worn than you expect, and per mile it usually costs less.

Many budget brands are owned by the big tyre makers, so they come out of serious factories. Look at the wet grip grade on the label and pick the best one you can afford. A used tyre has no label at all, so you are comparing a known grade with a guess. Best budget tyre brands shows who makes what, and tyre labels explained shows how to read the grades.

Send the size or registration and we send back new budget and mid range options with a fitted price. You pay by a secure payment link sent to your phone.
