Nexen tyres fitted at your door

Most Nexen tyres sold here are made in Europe or Korea. Nexen opened its European factory at Zatec in the Czech Republic in August 2019.

That plant was a one billion dollar investment, built to make up to eleven million tyres a year for markets including the UK. The company also runs plants at Yangsan and Changnyeong in South Korea and at Qingdao in China.

The country of manufacture is moulded into the sidewall, so if it matters to you, ask when you book and we will check the tyre we hold for your size.

Nexen Tire is a South Korean manufacturer with roots back to 1942, when it started as Heung-A Tire. It took the Nexen name in 2000, a blend of next and century.

It is now one of the three big Korean tyre brands alongside Hankook and Kumho. It is not a rebadged budget brand and it is not owned by a European premium maker. It designs and builds its own tyres and supplies them to car factories as well as to fitters like us.

Mid-range. Nexen sits above the no-name budget tyres on price and performance, and below the European premium names.

In money terms a Nexen usually costs a fair bit less than the equivalent Continental or Michelin in the same size, while still giving you a branded tyre with original-equipment construction. A typical Nexen touring tyre such as the N'Blue HD Plus should give somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 miles, depending on the car, your driving and your tyre pressures.

Performance tyres like the N'Fera Sport use softer compounds and wear faster, which is true of every brand. The biggest thing you can do to make any tyre last is keep the pressures right and get the wheel alignment checked if the edges are wearing. Our guide on how long tyres last has the detail.

Plenty. Nexen supplies original equipment tyres to Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Porsche among others.

Yes. The N'Blue 4Season is the all-season tyre, carrying the three-peak mountain snowflake marking, and the WinGuard range covers dedicated winter tyres.

In the North West and North Wales an all-season tyre is the practical choice for most people: cold, wet mornings for half the year, the odd snow day, and no need to swap tyres twice a year or store a second set.

That is why the name looks familiar on the drive from the Etihad. It has no bearing on how the tyre grips, but it does tell you this is a serious global brand rather than a label nobody has heard of.

No more than any other mid-range tyre, and the touring ranges are among the quieter options.

Road noise depends far more on the size and type of tyre than on the badge: a wide, low-profile performance tyre will always hum more than a 15-inch touring tyre. Legally yes, as long as the two tyres on the same axle are the same size, construction and speed rating.

Mixing brands front to rear is common and safe. Mixing across one axle is allowed but not something we recommend, because the two tyres will grip differently in the wet. No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. A Michelin will out-brake and out-handle a Nexen at the limit in the wet.

What is worth knowing is how big that gap is against how big the price gap is. For a car doing ordinary miles on ordinary roads, the Nexen does the job and the difference stays in your pocket. For a heavy-mileage car or something quick, buy the Michelin — we fit those too, at the same door, for the same fitting price.

Same answer, same reasoning. Bridgestone is a premium name with the test results to match, and it costs more.

Nexen's argument is not that it beats them. It is that it is a real manufacturer with original-equipment approval from Kia, Hyundai and Porsche, at a price a long way below them. Tell us the size and we will quote both so you can see the actual gap rather than guessing at it.

Two criticisms come up repeatedly, and both are fair. Owners are split on wet-weather confidence on some models, and the performance ranges wear faster than the touring ones.

Neither is unique to Nexen — soft performance compounds wear quickly on every brand — but it is worth knowing before you buy an N'Fera Sport expecting touring-tyre mileage. If long life matters more to you than grip in the bends, we will point you at the N'Blue HD Plus instead. Uneven or early wear is very often wheel alignment rather than the tyre.

Look for a four-digit number on the sidewall. The first two digits are the week, the last two are the year, so 2325 means week 23 of 2025.

We show you that code before the tyre goes on, because it is your tyre and you are entitled to know how long it sat in a warehouse. It is one of the few things a mobile fitter can do that ordering online simply cannot.

Nexen backs its tyres against manufacturing defects. The exact terms vary by range and by market, so we check what applies to your tyre when you book rather than quoting a figure that might be out of date.

A defect is not the same as damage. A kerbed sidewall, a nail or a pothole is wear and tear, not a warranty claim — though a nail is often a puncture repair rather than a new tyre, and we will always tell you which it is.
