A flat on the motorway is one of the most dangerous places to break down. Do this first.
If it’s safe, keep going at low speed to the next exit or motorway services. If you can’t, move onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency refuge area (ERA) — as far left as possible, wheels pointed left.
Put your hazard lights on, get everyone out of the left-hand doors and behind the safety barrier, well away from the carriageway. Keep pets in the vehicle. Never attempt a roadside repair yourself on a live motorway.
Call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or use an orange SOS phone if there is one — it pinpoints your location. Call 999 if you or anyone is in danger. On a smart motorway they can close the lane and send help.
