A tyre that is only a bit soft still flexes more than it should, and on a long downhill run with lots of braking it gets hot quickly. That is when a slow puncture turns into a flat, often at the worst spot. Pumping it up helps for a few minutes at most. Fell roads and tracks are full of sharp stones, and walls and gates shed nails and staples. If the hole is small and in the middle of the tread, a proper plug and patch will usually last the life of the tyre. A cut in the shoulder or the side wall is not safe to repair. If the tyre was driven flat down the track, the lining may be torn even though the outside looks fine. We show you what we find, and if it cannot be saved, the new tyre goes on in the same visit.

Slow down gently and keep the wheel straight. Use the next passing place or a gateway to get fully off the road, then hazards on. Do not stop on a blind bend.

Get everyone out on the side away from traffic and stand clear. The valley road is narrow and walkers drive it in both directions, often unsure of the way. If the car is blocking the road or stuck where others cannot see it in time, ring 999 first. On a faster road with a barrier, stand behind the barrier. Do not attempt a wheel change in a passing place with cars squeezing by.

Yes. If you come back from the fells to a flat tyre, send us the reg and a pin, and we come up to the car. You do not need to drive anywhere.

Tell us where the locking wheel nut key is, usually the glovebox. If the car is on a grass verge or a rough parking spot, the fitter brings boards for the jack. While you wait, get warm and dry; a long wait on a cold fell is no fun. We give you a time for the van when we reply. If you would rather head home, you can leave the key somewhere agreed and we message you when it is done.

Check the tread depth. The UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central part of the tyre, but on steep, wet roads you will want a good deal more than that.

Try the 20p test: push a 20p coin into the main grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, the tread is getting low. Look for cracks, bulges or cords showing in the side wall too.
