Industrial estates are hard on tyres: screws, pallet nails, metal strapping and broken glass. A small hole in the central tread usually takes a proper repair. Anything in the shoulder or the side wall cannot be made safe. If you drove to work on it flat, the inside may be torn even though the outside looks fine. We show you what we find. If it is past saving, a new tyre goes on while we are there, so you can still drive home at the end of the shift.

The A34 round the Parkhouse Roundabout is busy with lorries heading to the estates. Get everyone out on the side away from traffic and behind the barrier where there is one. If you are stuck in a live lane, ring 999 first. Do not try to change the wheel with lorries passing close by. A space saver on the A34 is not worth the risk, and neither is standing between the car and the traffic.

We can still change the tyre. The fitter removes the locking nut with the right tools and fits the tyre on the same visit.
Mention that the key is missing when you send the reg, so the fitter comes ready. It adds some time to the job, but it will not stop it. We fit a standard nut in its place afterwards, so the wheel comes off easily next time. Company cars and pool vans often turn up with the key missing, so this is nothing unusual for us. Once the new nut is on, keep the spare key somewhere you will remember, like the glovebox, and tell anyone else who drives the car.

Send the reg, and if you can, the size off the side wall including the load letters at the end. Van tyres need the right load rating for what the van carries, not just the right size. We match it properly, and give you three prices. Common van sizes are often on board; less common ones are ordered to your reg first, with a date before you agree. Every tyre we fit is new. Look at the tread. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central part of the tyre, but grip in the wet drops a long way before that.
An easy check: put a 20p coin in the main grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, the tread is getting low and it is time to price up. Look for cracks, bulges or cords showing on the side wall too, and for one edge wearing faster than the other. Not sure? Send a photo of the tread and the side wall and we will tell you honestly if it can wait. When you do replace, each quote shows budget, mid range and premium so you can choose.
