Changing a wheel at the roadside is doable — if you have a spare, the tools and a safe spot. But it’s also where a lot of people get hurt. Here’s how to do it safely, and when you should call instead.
Only attempt a change if you’re well off the carriageway on firm, level ground. On a motorway hard shoulder or a fast road, don’t — get behind the barrier and call for help. No job is worth standing in live traffic.
Handbrake on, in gear, wheel chocked, hazards on, everyone out and safe.
Crack the nuts before jacking, then raise on the jacking point.
Fit the spare, lower, then tighten nuts firmly in a star pattern.
Most spares today are space-savers — limited to around 50mph and short distances. Get a full replacement fitted as soon as you can. And if you have no spare at all, see what to do with no spare.
